The current state of Dominica
The current state of Dominica reveals deep-seated challenges in government, the church, and broader society. These issues are not merely political or cultural but stem from humanity's fallen nature and rebellion against God.
Government: Corruption and Inefficiency
Governing authorities suffer from corruption, abuse of power, mismanagement of resources, and unjust systems. Leaders prioritize personal gain over the common good, leading to poor infrastructure, unreliable public services (such as frequent power outages), and economic dependency that stifles true prosperity. Scripture condemns such practices as rooted in sin: bribery and perversion of justice are explicitly warned against (Proverbs 17:23), and rulers who oppress or exploit are seen as defying God's design for authority to promote good and punish evil (Romans 13:1-4). Corruption reflects the heart's deceitfulness (Jeremiah 17:9) and the broader "corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire" (2 Peter 1:4), where greed and self-interest replace stewardship and righteousness.
Church: Fragmentation and Lack of Unity
The church frequently appears divided along denominational lines, lacking the cohesive witness Scripture demands. Instead of functioning as one body under Christ, congregations can prioritize secondary differences over shared faith, resulting in weakened ministry and diminished impact. This disunity grieves the Holy Spirit and contradicts Jesus' prayer for believers to be one, "so that the world may believe" (John 17:21). Paul urges the church to maintain "the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3), warning that division arises from pride, selfishness, and failure to walk in love (1 Corinthians 1:10-13). Such fragmentation is a symptom of sin's lingering effects, where individual or group agendas eclipse humble submission to Christ's headship.
Society: Economic Hardship, Instability, and Moral Decline
Wider society grapples with poverty, overwork, rising costs, crime, health challenges, and general unrest, creating a sense of exhaustion and chaos. People often feel "broke and tired," with limited opportunities and daily struggles amplified by unreliable basics like electricity or water. The clear teaching of Scripture tells of what happens when men choose not to lead, where greed, violence, and idolatry fuel instability. Without Christ, men's efforts lead to futility, as "all have turned aside" and "there is none who does good" (Romans 3:12), resulting in moral and spiritual decline.
Ultimately
these interconnected problems—corrupt leadership, divided believers, and chaotic communities—point to the root issue: men unwilling to lead as God ordained. The Bible offers no illusion that human systems can fully eradicate such decay apart from divine intervention. True hope lies in repentance, turning to Christ, and His redemptive work that promises ultimate renewal, through His church, to establish perfect justice and peace at the end of time. (Revelation 21:1-5). Until then, the call remains for individuals and the church to live faithfully amid the brokenness, pointing others to the only source of lasting order: Christ or chaos.
